ASUS is rolling out a preview driver bringing AMD’s FSR Upscaling 4.1—the company’s machine-learning-based image reconstructor—to the ROG Xbox Ally X and ROG Xbox Ally X20. The release marks both devices as the first AMD-powered handhelds to officially receive the technology.
Installation is intentionally low-friction: open Armoury Crate SE, navigate to Update Center > Preview Updates, and install. Once active, FSR 4.1 toggles on through the Command Center and applies across more than 400 games supporting FSR 3.1 or later, requiring no per-game patching or developer updates. Because this is a preview build, ASUS flags that it may contain bugs or instability, following the same model as the Xbox Insider and Windows Insider programs.
Handheld Driver Customization & Architecture
The handheld-specific release follows a broader platform expansion AMD announced alongside the Adrenalin Edition 26.10.1 desktop driver. That update extended FSR 4.1 support to Radeon RX 6000 Series graphics cards, Ryzen AI Max processors, and Ryzen AI 9 laptop processors.
The Ally preview arrives three days later because handheld gaming devices do not receive AMD’s standard Adrenalin driver directly. ASUS customizes and distributes its GPU driver packages, meaning Ally owners depend on ASUS’s software release timeline.

FSR 4 marked AMD’s pivot from spatial and temporal upscaling to machine-learning image reconstruction. Where FSR 3.1 applied deterministic algorithms to a low-resolution frame—producing softer output with more temporal instability—FSR 4.1 runs a trained convolutional neural network that infers fine detail from input frames and motion vectors.
-
FSR 3.1 Upscaling: Relies on deterministic spatial and temporal filters running on standard shader cores, resulting in a softer output and occasional ghosting or shimmering.
-
FSR 4.1 Machine-Learning Upscaling: Utilizes a trained convolutional neural network tailored for lightweight handheld models, delivering sharper edge reconstruction, significantly reduced shimmer, and superior clarity in motion.
The primary engineering challenge for handhelds is hardware acceleration. RDNA 4 desktop graphics cards carry dedicated hardware for FP8 neural network acceleration, while the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme APU inside the Ally X and X20 does not. For the Ally’s APU, AMD developed a dedicated lightweight model purpose-built for the thermal and power constraints of handheld hardware. Jack Huynh, AMD’s Senior Vice President and General Manager of Computing and Graphics, described the model as purpose-built for the APU environment rather than a direct desktop port.
Hardware Showcase: ROG Xbox Ally X20

The ROG Xbox Ally X20 is ASUS’s twenty-year anniversary edition of the Ally line. It launched at US retail priced at $1,299.99 (and ¥258,800 in Japan).
-
Processor & Memory: AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme APU paired with 24 GB LPDDR5X RAM.
-
Display Upgrade: 7.4-inch ROG Nebula HDR OLED panel featuring a 120 Hz refresh rate, 1,400 nits peak brightness, and FreeSync Premium Pro certification.
-
Ergonomics & Controls: Translucent black finish with gold accents, Tunnel Magnetoresistance (TMR) joysticks to eliminate stick drift, and a convertible D-pad (four-way cross or eight-way fighting layout).
ASUS showcased this device alongside the ROG Xbox Ally X during AMD’s official announcement event. The Blood of Dawnwalker, a graphically intensive open-world title, served as AMD’s primary demonstration game—showing frame rates improving from roughly 54 fps under FSR 3.1 to approximately 63 fps under FSR 4.1, paired with sharper reconstruction in motion.
Ecosystem Rollout & Console Timeline
AMD’s official Adrenalin Edition 26.10.1 explicitly states that it does not support handheld gaming devices. Desktop and laptop users install directly from AMD, whereas Ally owners obtain driver updates via Armoury Crate SE. A similar constraint applies to the Steam Deck (where Valve manages SteamOS updates) and other OEM handhelds.

Direct Driver Armoury Crate / Per-Game Game
Global Toggle Custom Driver Developer Patch
Scott Van Vliet, Xbox CTO, confirmed that Microsoft and AMD optimized FSR 4.1 for Xbox hardware across console hardware, DirectX, and shader technology.
-
Console Implementation: Console support is coming soon. A handful of FSR 4.1-enabled titles are expected to reach Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S during the holiday season, with adoption continuing through 2027. Unlike the Ally, console games require individual developer patches.
-
Handheld Implementation: On the Ally, any title in the 400-plus-game FSR compatibility library supporting FSR 3.1+ applies FSR 4.1 automatically via the driver toggle.
-
Next-Gen Vision: AMD confirmed its next-generation platform, FSR Diamond, will introduce multi-frame generation to power Project Helix, Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox hardware platform unveiled at GDC 2026.
Installation Guide
To install and activate the FSR 4.1 preview driver on your device:
-
Open Armoury Crate SE on your ROG Xbox Ally X or X20.
-
Navigate to Update Center > Preview Updates.
-
Download and install the FSR 4.1 preview driver.
-
Open the Command Center and enable the AMD FSR Upscaling toggle.
-
Launch any game with FSR 3.1+ support; the ML upscaler will apply automatically.
